$300,000 Investment Honors Japan/Lansing Community College Exchange Program

Lansing Community College (LCC) students will find some outdoor solace this winter in the Shigematsu Memorial Garden, which is LCC’s mid-campus Japanese garden.

The garden is part of a $300,000 investment to commemorate LCC’s relationship with its Japanese sister region, Shiga Prefecture. The garden, which is located on the west side of LCC’s campus, includes a rock garden, lanterns, a pond and a water basin.

“It’s designed for four seasons because the climate in that area of Japan is very similar to Michigan,” says Chris Strugar-Frisch, with LCC’s Administrative Services Division.

LCC has a Japanese exchange program and so far, more than 500 students and 75 faculty members have participated in the program. The garden represents the exchange program’s 25th anniversary.

“It just takes away a lot of your tension and stress, it’s really a soothing place to walk through,” Struger-Fritsch says.
