An insurance company new to the Capital region wants 100 people to join its ranks. They’ll have to like people, own a laptop, primarily work remotely and work on commission, but the benefits will be great, says Dennis McComb, branch manager of the new Liberty National Life Insurance Co. office in Lansing.
The company opened its new office at 4990 Northwind Dr. in May and has already hired four Capital region employees, two more in Grand Rapids and four in the Saginaw-Midland area.
Eight others are in the certification process which includes passing a licensing exam. McComb says he’s already received 6,000 resumes.
Its goal is to hire 100 people, 75 of them to be based in Lansing.
The downturn in the Midwest economy has been a draw for the insurer that has recently opened offices in Indiana and Ohio as well.
“The unemployment rate doesn’t hurt in recruiting,” McComb says.
McComb chose the Lansing site for its central location, although he projects future offices in Battle Creek and Grand Rapids.
He knows the Midwest well, having grown up in Indiana. His wife grew up in Holt. He’s been with Liberty for decades and worked all over the country but jumped at the chance to open the Michigan office.
“There’s something special about the Midwest personality,” he says.
Liberty National specializes in life and health insurance for middle-income people, McComb says, although the company has not yet been approved in Michigan to sell health policies. It is owned by Texas-based Torchmark Corp. and employs 8,500 full-time representatives.
