Healthcare professionals, local school districts and the Impression Five Science Center are working hard to get kids interested in the lucrative business of blood, guts and the like.
For the second year in a row, Impression Five Science Center and the Capital Healthcare and Employment Council put
on an interactive event for kids ages 4 to 14. This year’s attendees
were double last year, with 1,600 kids attending this year as opposed
to last year’s 522.
“One of the most
effective ways to help with the long term workforce development issue
is to tap into young kids,” says Cindy Whittum with the health care
council.
The kids go to 16 interactive
stations that focused on different aspects of healthcare. One station,
the “scoop the fat” station, let kids hold on to the amount of Crisco
that’s equivalent to the fat in one Happy Meal.
They also listened to different healthcare professionals talk about their jobs.
“We
wanted to make sure it’s fun and interactive,” Whittum says. “We want
to let them know there are options out there. They don’t have to be a
doctor or a nurse. There are lots of options.”
The next annual event will be held in February or March of next year.
