The East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation and Arts received a $20,000 Access to Recreation grant, which will help give residents and visitors better access to local parks.
The money, part of a W.K. Kellogg Foundation initiative, will be used to expand two group picnic shelters on the Northern Tier Trail Recreation Complex.
The Northern Tier Trail Recreation Complex encompasses 66 acres of land including the Abbot Road Park, East Lansing Family Aquatic Center and the East Lansing Softball complex.
The funds will also pay for three new wheelchair-accessible picnic areas for the complex and a pedestrian route to the Northern Tier Trail.
The grant will be combined with 25 percent matching funds through the City of East Lansing.
