One of the sweetest places in Mid-Michigan saw
a 20 percent increase in revenues last year and appears to be going
nowhere but up.
Linda Hundt, owner of Sweetie-licious Pie Pantry,
opened her DeWitt bakery in 2005. Since then, she’s won multiple state
and national pie contests. She’s also found a way to make a living
doing what she loves.
“There’s articles
about us all over the place,” Hundt says. “The business is definitely
growing. We grew by 20 percent last year.”
Hundt
says she’s thought about expanding her small storefront, but the
logistics of moving her supplies have prevented her from getting
bigger. She also doesn’t want to lose the personal touch that can
dissipate when a hometown store multiplies.
“My
goal is to expand so everyone can have a place like this, where they
can go and feel loved and have good food,” she says. Hundt’s also
working on a cook book and on expanding her on-line ordering presence.
Hundt’s
decadent pies dominate local news media, but she’s also made a national
cameo. This September, Hundt’s pies will be featured in a Food Channel piece about pies.
“I found through all this that I’m a pretty good business woman,” Hundt says.
Hundt’s baking classes, which accommodate six to seven students, are booked for two years.
