Food giant Campbell’s Soup has its hands on a patent for a new soup product developed at Michigan State University (MSU). Students call it Souper Snackers Chicken Noodle Bites.
The bites put the soup – including broth and vegetables – inside of the noodle. MSU Food Science and Human Nutrition Department students developed the product so
they could compete in the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) competition.
The team was one of six finalists that got to compete for top place at the annual IFT meeting in Chicago. MSU ended up getting first place and catching the eye of Campbell’s, which has had the patent for nine months. The company gets a year to decide if it wants the patent.
For the competition, students were required to come up with a product that both meets a consumer need and tastes good, says Janice Harte, MSU Food Production Development (FPD) team adviser.
