Communications Firm Builds on 15-Year Success of Virtual PR

Well before “virtual office” became a part of the everyday urban vocabulary, Anne Harcus and her husband, Mark Holoweiko, started a top-notch public relations and marketing firm from their Haslett home.

Harcus didn’t know how well the market would respond to Stony Point Communications, but the operation continues to grow as it celebrates its 15-year anniversary.

“We’re definitely poised for growth,” Harcus says. Stony Point Communications was launched as a virtual corporation set up on a network model. This allows Stony Point Communications to use a network of creative partners when working on larger projects.

As Stony Point Communication’s has grown, so has the appeal of the virtual company. Harcus says rising gas prices, the desire to decrease company overhead, a growing global marketplace and Internet accessibility have all added to this appeal.

“When the company first started 15 years ago, there were really questions about how legitimate being virtual would be,” says Hollie Rusthoven, who joined Stony Point Communications in 2005. “But now people say, ‘How did you get that job?’”

Stony Point Communications has clients all over the country and recently nabbed former USA Today writer Mark Crane as its new senior communications consultant. They also added Jake Davison to the staff as an executive consultant.

“We’ve been growing and I see us heading for more,” Harcus says, adding that the company works with freelancers and established businesses, but will add more full-time staff as needed.

“I’ve lived and worked in a lot of different places before landing here, but in Lansing, there’s very good advertising and public relations across the board,” Rusthoven says. “There’s a lot of talent here.”
