$18,000 Virtual Art Tour Gives Context to East Lansing Art

East Lansing Arts Commission member Ed Cheeney wanted to make public art accessible to everyone, including the disabled. So he donated $18,000 worth of his company’s time and resources to develop a virtual tour of 18 public art pieces in East Lansing

The tour can be accessed from the Internet. Five of the pieces include 360-degree tours, and the remaining pieces include detailed 3-D impressions.

“We wanted to bring some of the technology we develop here at CMC2, and combine that with experience, and take them right to the location to look at the art pieces,” says Cheeney, who also owns Cheeney Media Concepts2 (CMC2), an East Lansing-based production company.

Cheeney’s staff took up to 700 pictures of each art piece featured in the 360-degree tour.

Cheeney has worked in London and lived in Africa and the Middle East, but says this technology is fairly unique.

“There’s lots of art institutes that have 'look-throughs' or 'look-in' rooms, but you’re not looking at sculptures. I think in that way it’s a unique idea,” he says.
