August Sales Up 500 Percent for Williamston Corn Stove Dealer

The month of August was hot, but oil prices were also on the rise, prompting many people to think ahead about winter heating costs. It proved a good trend for Williamston-based Wood & Sons Corn Bin, which saw monthly sales increase 500 percent over last year.

Wood & Sons Corn Bin sells biomass stoves that enhance home or office heating systems. The stoves are heated using corn or other biomass. Unlike traditional wood burning or coal burning stoves, these stoves emit very little carbon monoxide, says Teresa Wood with Wood & Sons Corn Bin.

Wood says her business is largely correlated with gas prices.

“People still think gas is coming down, or that it’s not going to be cold this winter,” she says. But, they’re catching on, which explains the high August sales numbers.

Wood and her husband, Dave, have been in business for about five years. When they opened, the were using a very small section of the 2,700 square foot, 164 West Grand River Avenue building they own. The rest was rented to an antiques dealer.

They expanded as the business grew, and now biomass stoves dominate the entire 1,500 square foot showroom.
