Former MSU Journalism Professor Launches Sustainability Publication

Former Michigan State University (MSU) professor and award winning journalist, Bonnie Bucqueroux, has started a new on-line magazine devoted to sustainable agriculture.

Bucqueroux’s brainchild, the "Sustainable Farmer," grew out of a need to start a national dialogue about sustainable living, specifically creating environmentally friendly local food sources. Bucqueroux was the managing editor of "Michigan Farmer Magazine," but left the field because she was concerned the agriculture industry was making itself vulnerable to an unsustainable system.

After leaving "Michigan Farmer Magazine," Al Gore invited her to be one of only 1,000 people in the country trained to give his presentation of “An Inconvenient Truth.” Bucqueroux also started teaching digital journalism at MSU.

“I really felt this (the "Sustainable Farmer") was a unique opportunity to take this digital journalism piece, the climate piece and the agricultural journalism piece and bring them all together,” Bucqueroux says.

Bucqueroux is gradually adding bloggers from around the country to the site. She also has video feeds.

“It’s really spreading rapidly,” she says. “I’m amazed at the growth with the online visitors.”
