Michigan State University (MSU) students played their
part in the City of East Lansing’s recycling efforts during this year’s Pack Up,
Pitch In, Help Out program. The program is intended to curb the amount of trash
flowing through the city during college move-outs.
According to excerpts from the article:
The program, which has operated in various forms on campus
for a dozen years, provides students with an easy opportunity to donate old
clothes, shoes, carpeting, electronics equipment, non-perishable food and even
furniture that they don't want to take with them as they leave campus for the
summer.
Usable items are donated to local charities; the less
usable are recycled.
"Student move-out time is always a challenge for the
city, though things have improved over the years," said Angela Mabin,
public service administrator for the city.
"What we're trying to do is help reduce the amount
of clutter at the curb and improve the appearance of the neighborhood during
move out," she said.
