MSU Part of $79.5 Million Alternative Energy Research Grant

The three Michigan universities that compose the University Research Corridor recently received a $79.5 million grant to boost alternative energy research.

According to excerpts from the article:

Michigan's three main research universities were granted more than $79.5 million for alternative energy research and development in 2007, according to a study to be released Wednesday.

That amount is expected to increase as the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University assist efforts to find cleaner and renewable energy sources in the wake of rising oil prices.

The three universities paid for the annual study by East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group to highlight their economic impact. The schools have a partnership called the University Research Corridor.

Alternative energy research is considered a key part of Michigan's efforts to diversify its economy. The state, heavily reliant on the struggling auto industry, has had the nation's highest annual average unemployment rate since 2006.
