The City of East Lansing is confident that its annual community cleanup was just as successful as last year's cleanup, which resulted in recycling or reusing 600 cars and nearly 40 tons of recyclable and reusable goods.
According to excerpts from the article:
"The first time I couldn't even see out the rearview window," said Jill Baker, 50, who has donated items to Project Pride since it started 13 years ago. "I wait for the event all year and collect stuff."
Last year, 600 cars stopped by to drop off almost 40 tons of recyclable and reusable goods, said David Smith, the city's environmental specialist. He estimated that this year's turnout was similar.
Reusable items will be donated to charitable organizations, such as the Salvation Army, St. Vincent Catholic Charities and Share-A-Bike. About 87 percent of last year's donated items were reused or recycled, he said.
That's better than previous years, Smith said. The amount of goods thrown away after the event has decreased by 60 percent to 65 percent since the project began.
