Michigan State University (MSU) just finished the renovation of Holden Hall, an investment that’s turned the 1967 building into a 21st century residential destination attractive to a generation of young techies.
According to excerpts from the article:
The game room, which has Wii and Xbox 360 systems along with a pool table, opened in January. It's a small part of a $10 million renovation that has turned the first floor of the 1967 building into a 21st century space.
The central common area, created by moving a few walls, has been redone in blazing bright reds, oranges and greens. There are pods of chairs and couches, meant to make the large space feel small. Flat screen TVs abound. There is a high-tech conference room and a community kitchen.
"They want the wow; they want the color," MSU Housing Director Angela Brown said. "They come expecting wireless and gaming rooms and a coffee shop type atmosphere."
Which, according to Vennie Gore, assistant vice president for housing and food services, isn't just about high-end electronics. It's also about creating vital community spaces where students can study and socialize, where they can make personal connections on a 46,000-student campus, where the learning they do in the classroom can filter into their off hours.
