MSU Makes $10 Million Investment in High-Tech Residence Halls

MSU Residence Halls are being updated to include academic study spaces, high tech conference rooms, communal kitchens, flat screens and even Wii’s and Xbox’s.

According to excerpts from the article:

Darius Barrett was playing Guitar Hero, tapping buttons in sync with Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." There was a giant flat screen TV in front of him, two friends lounging on the brightly colored couch behind him.

His Wednesday classes were over, and Barrett, a Michigan State University freshman, was killing time in "The Outlet" a game room at Holden Hall. He doesn't live there, but he does appreciate the amenities.

The game room, which has Wii and Xbox 360 systems along with a pool table, opened in January. It's a small part of a $10 million renovation that has turned the first floor of the 1967 building into a 21st century space.

The central common area, created by moving a few walls, has been redone in blazing bright reds, oranges and greens. There are pods of chairs and couches, meant to make the large space feel small. Flat screen TVs abound. There is a high-tech conference room and a community kitchen.

That, according to MSU housing officials, is what the future of the dorms looks like because that's what the current generation of students wants.
