A proposed $115 million development plan that would
encompass Grand River Avenue,
Abbot Road
and Valley Court Park in East Lansing,
is getting closer to becoming a reality.
According to excerpts from the article:
Strathmore Development Co.'s City Center II project would
span from East Lansing's
Grand River Avenue
and Abbot Road
to Valley Court Park. It would include five new buildings of residential and
commercial space. Work could start as early as spring and is likely to take
several years.
The key component is a nine-story, 300,000-square-foot
building with space likely to be run by the Michigan State
University Museum
or the city.
"This really bookends downtown," Strathmore
President Scott Chappelle said, referring also to the proposed Eli and Edythe Broad
Art Museum to be built on
campus to the southeast. "It would be really beneficial to the downtown to
have a cultural district."
The project, however, faces resistance from some area
property owners.
Chappelle said he's acquired the land he needs for the
residential and commercial components of the project. But City Center II also
includes a 100-space parking structure to be built by East Lansing.
The city does not yet own the property along Evergreen Avenue it
needs for the structure and at least one property owner does not want to sell.
