Haslett screenwriter Fred Foote is in Flint working on “Alleged,” a feature film about the historic Scopes Monkey Trail.
According to excerpts from the article:
Crossroads Village is all dressed up for its starring role as Dayton, Tennessee circa 1925 in “Alleged,” a feature-length film on the historic Scopes Monkey Trial that began location shooting in Flint last week.
The village is playing the sleepy little southern town that hosted the trial of the century — the historic courtroom battle between Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan over the issue of teaching evolution in public schools.
Screenwriter Fred Foote, an East Lansing native who now lives in Haslett, said he and a friend discovered Crossroads while scouting for potential Michigan locations.
“It had the church, the drugstore, the courthouse, the barbershop. Virtually every scene we needed was already here. It’s uncanny how this fits our movie like a glove. And it’s all real, not a facade. You can go anywhere in this town, set up a camera and start shooting.”
Location manager Tom Jacob agreed. “The director loves it. And if the director loves it, then all our lives are good,” joked Jacob, laughing. “All the normal concerns we have on location aren’t here. There’s no closing down roads, no neighbors, no telephone lines. This is as close to being on a studio backlot as I’ve ever been outside Hollywood.”
