Michigan State University (MSU) is helping prepare high school-aged foster students for college through a series of summer school camps.
According to excerpts from the article:
The camp focuses on what the students can expect once they get to college. The Michigan State camp is an outgrowth of the university's Foster Care Alumni Services.
Eighteen young people participated in last year's camp and 25 were enrolled as of Friday, said organizer Angelique Day, a social work researcher and former foster child. She said seven of the eight counselors are ex-foster children who now attend Michigan State.
"The MSU foster camp provides young people in the foster care system a chance to have new experiences, learn new skills, meet new friends and dream about a brighter future than the often dismal past that many have experienced," said another organizer, John Seita.
