East Lansing Looking to Go Green With LEED Certification

The East Lansing City Council is discussing how to make the City of East Lansing more environmentally senstive in hopes of obtaining green city certification with the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The City Council last week discussed ways the city - home of Michigan State University - could decrease its impact on the environment.

Several ideas involve attaining certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, which offers four levels of distinction certified, silver, gold and platinum based on a project's environmental friendliness.

"We have an option to be a real leader, to set an example for our residents and for the whole state," said Council Member Nathan Triplett, who introduced the initiatives to the council. "There's clearly a need for more cities and towns to step up."
