Michigan State University (MSU) officials are celebrating their new $13 million Surplus Store and Recycling Center that will allow the school to process more recycled materials.
According to excerpts from the article:
There are solar panels on the roof that provide 10 percent of the building's electricity, a rainwater collection system that brings in water for toilets and power washers, motion sensors on the lights, porous asphalt in the parking lot, recycled tire art on the walls.
And then there's the matter of what goes on inside.
University officials say the $13 million facility, which opened officially last week, will allow them to double the amount of recyclable materials they process over the next two to three years.
MSU already pulls 14 percent of the white and mixed office paper, newspaper, cardboard and number 1 and 2 plastics used on campus out of the waste stream, nearly 1,700 tons last year.
