Okemos High School Students Launch New Energy Conservation Initiative

A group of Okemos High School students have launched an Alternative Energy and Sustainability Initiative in an effort to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.

According to excerpts from the article:

"Today is an experiment to see how much energy we can conserve on an ideal day," said senior Hemi Gandhi, 17, president of the group.

The group asked students and staff members to cut the amount of energy they used Tuesday by making changes such as turning off TVs and classroom lights when possible, unplugging unused personal appliances, turning off computers, printing double-sided worksheets with reduced margin sizes and posting assignments online instead of printing them.

The school's average daily energy consumption is 1.7 megawatts, Gandhi said. The students will compare that with the amount of energy used Tuesday, then calculate the savings.
