Michigan State University’s
(MSU) Jewish student center is bursting at the seams, so Hillel students
are asking the East Lansing City Council to approve a 2,450 square foot
expansion. Hillel acts as a cultural, social and worship center for the
university’s Jewish population.
According to excerpts from the article:
"We're
running out of room most weeks," said sophomore Eric Dropkin, 20.
"There are periodic weeks where there are not enough tables."
MSU
Hillel officials hope to remedy the situation with a two-story addition
on the south side of the 12,000-square-foot building at 360 Charles
St., Hughey said.
The East Lansing City
Council will hold a public hearing on the matter April 15. The project
already has gone through the Planning Commission and the Historic
District Commission, Hughey said, and City Council approval is the last
step.
"I just hope that it will provide a
building that will allow us to serve our students in a more comfortable
setting, or in a more adequate setting," Hughey said. "It's just too
crowded."
The 2,450-square-foot expansion
would add space for 100 more people in the dining room, enlarge the
kitchen, add an office and put a multipurpose room on the second floor,
Hughey said.
