LCC Seeks $2 Million in 2010 Budget to Update Automotive Technology Program

Lansing Community College hopes to attain $2 million from the feds in 2010 to improve their Automotive Technology Program.

New auto technologies such as the battery-powered wagon create a challenge for automotive repair programs such as the one at LCC, officials said. That's why college officials would like to snag $2 million from next year's federal budget to upgrade the program to keep up with changing hybrid, electric and fuel cell vehicles.

U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, included the program among 41 requests totaling $80.6 million he's making for the 2010 federal budget. The budget process for the next fiscal year that starts Oct. 1 is in the very early stages.

Marvin Argersinger, an LCC professor and coordinator of its automotive technology program, said it's a challenge for the college to keep up with the changes in auto technology.

It's costly to buy the equipment, including cars, needed to teach students, he said. But the increase in hybrid vehicles, in particular, requires mechanics to upgrade their skills on electrical and other systems.
