Michigan State University (MSU) is right on track with
its new Grand Rapids-based medical center and has already raised $36 million
for the center.
According to excerpts from the article:
Charles Webb, vice president for university development,
said fundraising will be a continuous process as construction begins this spring
until the school opens in 2010.
Sousa said faculty training also has been effective. More
than 40 future faculty at the Grand Rapids medical school are currently
training in East Lansing.
“We’ve had an excellent response,” said Aron Sousa,
senior associate dean of the MSU College of Human Medicine. “(The faculty) have
been carpooling to East Lansing to co-teach with existing East Lansing faculty
in courses for second-year students.”
With faculty recruitment being a priority, the school
recently added highly touted MSU medical school alumnus Christopher Glisson to
its staff, Sousa said.
David Kaufman, chairman of the MSU Department of
Neurology and Opthalmology and Glisson’s former teacher, said Glisson will
bring a rare expertise to MSU.
“There are no more than a dozen neuro-ophthalmologists in
the United States,” Kaufman said.
Kaufman said MSU was fortunate to bring Glisson from the
University of Pennsylvania, a top neuro-ophthalmology program in the United
States.
