New Plans for Year-Round City Market Moving Forward

Developer Pat Gillespie’s revised plans to create a new year-round City Market in downtown Lansing and a $22 to $25 million mixed use project near the Lugnuts Stadium are moving forward as Gillespie works with City Market managers and hotel organizations to finalize the project.

According to excerpts from the article:

At meetings last week, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and Eric Hart, who runs the agency that oversees the City Market, offered no dissent as Gillespie said the new market would be open year round in a heated and air-conditioned building.

Hart said the new market it will be about 5,000 square feet. Hart said the current market’s usable indoor space is about 8,000 square feet. Gillespie said the market could be larger if the market demanded it.

Meanwhile, Gillespie mentioned for the first time that he has had conversations with two hotel organizations about locating in or around his development.

Gillespie has proposed a $22 million to $25 million mixed usage plan called Market Place where the 1938 City Market building is along the Grand River between Shiawassee Street and the Lansing Center. Cedar Street is the eastern border. The plan calls for restaurants and other retail space as well as condominiums and apartments.

Gillespie’s original plan called for building a new “three-season” market in Riverfront Park immediately west of the City Market property.

Gillespie, Bernero and Hart met with a half-dozen members of Friends of the City Market, which has about 30 members, for about three hours on Dec. 19, then met for another two hours with vendors.
