Rain Gardens Livening Up Lansing Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods in the mid-Michigan area are using rain gardens to add a little extra natural pizzazz to the area while helping take care of drainage problems. The gardens use native Michigan plants to filter pollutants out of drain water.

Rain gardens provide a natural way to manage storm run-off. By using strategic planting of indigenous plants, the gardens collect the storm water and naturally reduce pollution.

Water that feeds the plants doesn't end up flooding streets or overflowing storm sewers. And when those overflows are prevented, the region's rivers and waterways stay cleaner.

Downtown Lansing has worked for some time to bring its new rain gardens to life. The project was developed as part of improving the Michigan Avenue corridor. The $3.2 million rain garden project was paid for with grant money and is helping beautify the area considered a gateway to the Capitol.
