$350,000 in Facade Work on Grand Ave Parking Ramp Will Include Bike Facilities

The owners of the South Grand Ave. parking ramp will be making it a little ‘greener’ with façade improvements that include getting rid of some of the concrete to add living vines in their place.

According to excerpts from the article:

The ramp's owners also plan to add secured bicycle parking and locker room facilities to the structure—a nod to green commuters who might not otherwise have a place to park their wheels.

"We think it's needed for downtown," said Shawn Elliott, a member of the project's development team.

The ramp updates are the first visible pieces of the planned 12-story Capitol Club Tower condominium project. The high-rise is slated to be built adjacent to the ramp, on space that includes the shuttered City Club.

Developers behind the condo project bought the parking ramp from the city last year for $1.5 million. It ultimately will be used for a mix of Capitol Club residents' and public parking.

The facade work will give the ramp a new look from Allegan Street, which ends at the ramp, and from its riverfront side.

Bicycler Rory Neuner said she's excited a developer would add a component for bikers.

"He understands the direction downtown and the city in general is trying to move in, which is more options for transportation," said Neuner, who is an urban policy specialist at the Michigan Environmental Council in Lansing and works on the Walk and Bike Lansing Task Force and League of Michigan Bicyclists.
