On Thursday, April 16, Mayor Virg Bernero rode in the bucket of a city truck to lay sedum seed on Lansing’s first-ever green roof above the Garden Project Resource Center on Lansing's Eastside.

Plants soon will spring from the soil's surface, another testament to the city's commitment to a cleaner, greener Lansing and improving air quality, reducing runoff, and seeking heating and cooling efficiencies in buildings.
After the hoopla was over, Lansing resident John Martinez, who lives nearby on the city's east side, grasped the hand of Murdock Jemerson, the city's parks and recreation director.
"It came off good," said Martinez, who approached Jemerson with the green roof idea almost a year ago. "I love it! I love it!"
Flying with Martinez's green roof concept, the city invested approximately $95,000 from its park millage fund for improvements to the center, including a new roof, restroom, community room and other indoor renovations, Jemerson said.
