Downtown Lansing’s most prominent new development, the
Stadium District, generated more than $20,000 for the Volunteers of America
(VOA) during its grand opening party.
According to excerpts from the article:
While hundreds of baseball fans stood outside waiting to
get into the big game at Oldsmobile Park, inside the new stadium district,
another kind of celebration was underway. Developers of the stadium district
joined forces with the Volunteers of America to help fulfill a great need.
Patrick Patterson, VOA Vice President of Operations:
"It's a significant need, typically homelessness declines after the cold
months, but for some reason we were over capacity all of March. You don't
expect that in March, so I'm very concerned about that."
Patrick Gillespie, President of Gillespie Group: "We
thought this would be a good way to expose Volunteers of America and what they
do for the city of Lansing and raise a few dollars."
People paid $100 a head for their contribution, and some
paid more than others. Even local artists sold off their cityscapes all in an
effort to make a difference.
