50 years, 50 stories: Story #14 Perry Nursery School

Building Blocks for a Brighter Future

Without a high-quality preschool education, at-risk children are more likely to enter kindergarten two years developmentally behind their peers. Many of them will never catch up.

Since 1934, Perry Nursery School has been working to counter that trend by educating and caring for the neediest children and families of Washtenaw County. Three key factors contribute to Perry’s success: excellent teachers who use a researched-based curriculum, a holistic approach to supporting each child that includes meals, health screenings and intervention services, and including parents as partners through ongoing teacher-parent conferences, home visits and workshops.

Over the years, the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation and its donors have provided nearly $60,000 in grants to support Perry Nursery School’s programs such as helping to keep tuition affordable by preserving an affordable sliding fee scale and funding critical summer enrichment activities.

Perry Nursery School’s mission– to prepare at-risk preschool children for future academic and social success while providing their parents opportunities for professional, personal, and parental growth – ensure that their graduates have an equal opportunity to succeed in school and in life.

One of the many ways the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation
supports all that is good in our community.
