50 years, 50 stories: Story #20 Ypsilanti District Library

Securing the Future of a Vital Community Asset

The Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) is everything a great community resource should be—and more.  In 2012, the Library logged over 520,000 visits from residents of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Township, and Superior Township. That same year, YDL’s three locations offered nearly 2,700 programs and events - book clubs, free concerts, story times for children, art exhibits, author visits, computer training classes, and job search resources. In addition, its bookmobile provided on-site service to schools, neighborhood centers, and special community events.

In 2009, the YDL Board of Directors established a permanent endowment at the Ypsilanti Area Community Fund – a geographic affiliate of the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation - to help secure the library’s future. The Fund’s first payout funded essential operations and staff positions. As YDL Director Jill Morey notes, "We’re proud to offer such a high level of service and a diverse set of programs - whether promoting childhood literacy, helping people find jobs, providing valuable cultural opportunities, or making our downtown a more exciting destination. A growing endowment fund not only helps secure the library’s future, but helps take our services from good to great."

One of the many ways the Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation
supports all that is good in our community.
