High school students from Clare and Shepherd to compete for college scholarships

Attend a football game just about anywhere and you’re lucky to win a hot dog, slice of pizza, or maybe even a t-shirt.

But students attending the Clare vs. Shepherd varsity football game on Friday, Sept. 20 will have the chance to win actual college scholarships from Mid Michigan College.

"The College has always been a community partner and is increasing efforts to support local communities across mid-Michigan. Mid’s mission is to develop knowledge and ability to empower learners and transform communities," says Scott Mertes, Vice President of Community Outreach and Advancement.

"In addition to serving nearly 5,000 students from the mid-Michigan area, we partner with a variety of local organizations including employers, service organizations, and community groups to help achieve this mission."

The Mid Michigan College Team Toss Challenge will occur during the game. Two students from both Clare and Shepherd high schools will compete as teams. Teammates stand 15 yards apart as one tosses 10 Mid Michigan College footballs to the other. That teammate will then attempt to catch the footballs in a basket.

Members of the winning team will each win a $500 scholarship to Mid. The runners-up will each receive a $100 gift card to the Mid Michigan College Bookstore.

Representatives from Mid will begin handing out giveaways at Clare’s Pioneer Football Field before the game at 6 p.m. Free refreshments will be provided by SpartanNash.

"We want to encourage community members to attend the game, support local student-athletes, and connect with Mid Michigan College," says Mertes.

Current students from Clare High School and Shepherd High School have through Thursday, Sept. 19 to enter the contest, which can be found online.
