Hudsonville’s Random Acts of Ice Cream honors everyday heroes

Everyone could use a little kindness these days, and what could be kinder than ice cream?

Hudsonville Ice Cream’s 2020 promotion Random Acts of Ice Cream asks people to nominate frontline health care heroes and others in essential roles such as teachers, delivery people, bus drivers, grocery store associates, and cafeteria workers.

“All year we’ve been honoring the dedication and commitment of healthcare heroes, frontline and essential workers, and teachers who are all doing their part to keep our communities moving forward during the pandemic,” says Rachel Messingschlager of Hudsonville Ice Cream. “Sending a box of ice cream is something small we can do to help make someone’s day a little sweeter while they are doing so much to inspire us and keep us healthy and safe during this time.”

The Holland company has sent hundreds of boxes of ice cream and thousands of pints to people who are making a difference in Michigan and two dozen other states across the country.

The program is slated to continue into 2021.

Erica Drogosch, a middle school consumer science teacher in Kalamazoo, was nominated by her mom for her work with kids.

“I honestly was shocked when it came and I am so proud of my mom and proud of my kids during this stressful time! Yummmm! I can’t wait to eat this all!!” she posted to Instagram.

People are telling their stories of Random Acts of Ice Cream and tagging the company on social media.

Hannah Rushton, of Grand Rapids, nominated her husband, a health care worker.

“I entered my husband into @hudsonville_ic’s Random Acts of Ice Cream to thank healthcare heroes and Hudsonville sent over a few of their most popular pints. Thank you to @hudsonville_ic for such a cool initiative! So grateful for my #healthcarehero. And so grateful for ice cream!!” she posted to Instagram.

Anyone can make a suggestion on the company’s nomination page: hudsonvilleicecream.com/random-acts/. With the holidays coming up, Hudsonville Ice Cream is putting an extra push behind its initiative.

“Know someone who is putting others first to make this holiday season extra special? We want to honor the people who are making the season brighter for others in their communities,” the company’s website states. “We believe kindness can change the way people see and experience the world. Random Acts of Ice Cream was created to honor special individuals and spark a little happiness in their lives.”
