Frankenmuth Brewery taps award-winning libations

Frankenmuth Brewery wants people in Mid-Michigan to know that its award-winning kegs are tapped, the mugs are tipped, and its doors are open for business.

The recently reopened brewery won over the tastebuds of judges in the annual World Expo of Beer competition at the end of May and walked away with one silver and two bronze medals. Seventy breweries from around the world -- including Sam Adams -- entered more than 400 beers in the competition.

Since the expo, the brewery has seen a welcome uptick in business. In fact, some people didn't know Frankenmuth Brewery was back in business until the expo, says Jordan Fagan, assistant brew master. The brewery closed in 2006, but reopened again last summer.

The brewery's Frankenmuth Pilsner won the silver medal in this year's expo, and the Oktoberfest and Frankenmuth Hefeweizen captured bronze medals this year.

The Oktoberfest is a copper-colored seasonal beer, the Frankenmuth Pilsner is a Germany-style lager, and the Hefeweizen is a sweet blend of spices and fruit, with hints of clove and banana.

The brewery's libations are sold on tap throughout the state, but the goal is to start selling by the bottle.

"We're back," Fagan says. "We just want to let people know that we're making good German beer again."
