A Midland neighborhood will get a facelift in August when more than 600 volunteers will spend five days spiffing up about 25 homes.
The project -- sponsored by
The Dow Chemical Company and
Midland County Habitat for Humanity -- will help revitalize the neighborhood bordered by State, North, Fournie, and Grove streets on the city's south side. Volunteers also will help build handicap accessible ramps and do some work in Fournie Park, located near the neighborhood.
Work in the neighborhood will take place from August 9-13, and will include everything from painting and roofing, to gutter cleaning and repairing porches and railings, says Joy Buchanan, project spokesperson. The City of Midland, Disability Network of Mid Michigan, and Midland Area Homes also are participating in the project. Some local businesses -- like Lowe's -- also are pitching in with needed supplies.
"The idea is to regenerate the neighborhood and help people feel proud of their homes who live in this neighborhood," she says.
Revitalizating the neighborhood also helps the community attract new people and businesses, Cunningham says. The neighborhood sits near the Loons Stadium, and is very visible.
"So this is an opportunity for people to highlight the community when people come to town," she says. "It's a big deal and we have a lot of interest in this. People like to help, and I think they like to see an immediate impact."
In past years, Dow Chemical has partnered with Habitat for Humanity in Saginaw and Bay counties for similar projects.
"This is an opportunity for Dow to give back to the community."
