Regional café favorite
Grounds for a Better World is opening a fourth location, at the Dow Bay Area Family Y in Bay City.
Owners David and Jill Helgerson say the new location at 225 Washington offers all the same espresso drinks, smoothies, baked goods and other treats that Grounds for a Better World is known for at its other locations.
As is appropriate at a family and fitness center, the café emphasizes healthy food choices. It also is sharing space with Café American of Midland, which offers up wraps, sandwiches, soups and salads in case you'd like something more substantial. And, although it's inside the Y, the café is open to the public, with no membership required.
Grounds for a Better World takes its name from a charitable business model that donates at least half its profits to chosen local and international organizations. The Helgersons say since the first café opened in 2009, more than $250,000 has been donated to partner organizations like the Y, Just for Kids Foundation of Bay City, Open Door, Cancer Services and Shelterhouse in Midland, and worldwide groups like Faith Village in Thailand and Rainbows4Children in Ethiopia.
