Outdoor archery course with 3D targets built at North Midland Family Center

If you build it, they will come. In response to community and patron requests, the North Midland Family Center unveiled its new outdoor archery course with 3-D targets recently.

"People in the community had been asking about an outdoor archery course," says Alison Ginter, the executive director of the center. "There weren't any in this part of Midland County. We started an archery class for kids in the spring, and that program was hugely successful -- very popular. The next step was to get the kids outside to learn more skills and more safety."

Ginter herself is an avid archer and once shot an arrow into a target and split an arrow that was already lodged in place -- a feat known as "Robin Hooding."

NMFC's course has ten elevated shooting stations, with targets placed among the trees and undergrowth. The course was designed with safety as a priority, but there is plenty in it to make it fun.

The 3D targets include a variety of animals, both real and fictional. There are boars, deer, antelope, fox and even a dragon.

The North Midland Family Center provides programs and services which positively promote social, emotional, intellectual, and physical well being for all individuals in the North Midland area.

"Archery is a terrific sport for kids, it teaches motor skills, confidence, self esteem, and safety," says Ginter. "It's a great sport even if you don't hunt. It's like basketball; just because you play basketball it doesn't mean you're going to try out for the NBA."
