Saginaw Valley adds graduate program in energy and materials

Alternatives to fossil fuel energy are becoming the norm rather than the exception--so there's a need for workers educated in alternative energies and energy technology.

Saginaw Valley State University
is helping with that education, with its recent approval to add a graduate program in energy and materials. The university's board of control approved a Master of Science in Energy and Materials degree at its latest meeting.

"Energy has become a key technical area regionally, nationally and globally," says Deborah Huntley, dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. "This program is designed to provide advanced scientific and engineering education to support the growth and demand for technologies that reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and to prepare students for the dynamic challenges related to alternative energy, energy storage industries, and advanced materials."

Courses in the program will begin to be offered in the 2011 fall semester, and incorporate topics from various engineering and science fields, in a flexible curriculum that can adapt as the energy industry changes. It is designed to appeal to professionals in many fields, as well as traditional graduate students.
