Delta College rolling out environmentally friendly bus route this fall

Delta College students and faculty members soon will have the chance to save a lot of money on gas and do something nice for the environment at the same time.

When the fall semester rolls around at the end of August, Delta College students and faculty will be able to take a bus directly to campus from the Meijer parking lot in Bay City, says Leanne Govitz, director of marketing and public information at Delta. The bus route, which also will include Saginaw Valley State University, will operate from Monday to Thursday, from 7 a.m. until 10:30 p.m.

By using the route, students can save on gas and get some studying done at the same time, Govitz says. The cost per ride will be 75 cents for students, and $1 for non-students.

The new route will help reduce Delta College's carbon footprint as well, she says. As a commuter college, carbon emissions from transportation to and from campus is the largest portion of Delta's carbon footprint.

"Delta has a long history of conservation, being environmentally friendly, and doing a lot of things to try to be more sustainable," Govitz says. This new transportation route will contribute to those efforts.

Initially, 30 parking spaces will be designated in the Meijer lot for the program, she says. Down the road, bike racks also might be available to commuters interested in riding the bus.

"We are really excited about the program," Govitz says.
