Ties & Tails Gala has huge success, raises $100,000 for animal shelter

There's an old saying in the world of journalism that indicates the two things that sell the most newspapers are babies and dogs.

Well, it seems that dogs are pretty good at bringing in funds, too. The first-ever Ties and Tails Gala was held recently by the Humane Society of Midland County at Dow Diamond with hopes of raising enough money to sustain operation of the shelter. The event, which included more then 300 guests who enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, raised approximately $100,000.

"We are thrilled with the community support we have received, and we look forward to an even stronger partnership with the community as we service and assist the animals that come through our doors in 2012," says Kendra Marshall, president of the Midland County Humane Society.

The organization must continue fundraising efforts. Monthly operational costs are approximately $20,000 and they are in need of an expansion as they are running out of space to house the animals.
