Bone Daddy's BBQ of Midland wins first place and $7,500 cook-off prize

Midland is the proud home of many great businesses and the city can say it's home to the best barbecue around.

Bone Daddy's BBQ earned itself two big trophies at the West Nugget Rib Cook-off in Sparks, Nev. earlier this month. The lip-smackin' restaurant earned first-place, which included a prize of $7,500, and the People's Choice Award, officially making them "The Best in the West." Bone Daddy's beat out 24 other competitive cookers.

Bone Daddy's is no stranger to winning at the event. This marks the third time the restaurant has taken home the title and the second-straight year they have won the coveted People's Choice.

"There is no better trophy than the People's Choice," says Bone Daddy's owner Bill Wall. "That means out of a half-million people, the majority liked your ribs best."

Wall's secret to victory? Michigan's own wild black cherries in the sauce and some quality sugar maple hardwood to smoke the ribs. Typically, rib competitors use white oak and mesquite for smoking ribs.

This year marked Wall's 20th in the cook-off. He says he will reinvest the $7,500 top prize in order to ensure his team will stay competitive in future events.
