Delta College to receive recognition of excellence in leadership

There are several Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Centers across the state, including one, the Great Lakes Bay Region center, hosted by Delta College.

It's a mark of respect that this year, Delta College has been chosen as the center's outstanding host for 2010. The award, called the Recognition of Excellence-Leadership Award, will be presented this month at a conference in Traverse City.

The award is given out each year to outstanding program partners and network personnel, like Delta College Corporate Services, which supports and hosts the regional small business development center. Its ultimate goal is to help and support entrepreneurs and startup companies in a seven-county area of Arenac, Bay, Huron, Midland, Saginaw, Sanilac and Tuscola counties.

"This is a terrific program supporting local entrepreneurs, and Delta College is proud to assist in the growth of business in our region," says Jean Goodnow, Delta College president, of the award.

And it has, with more than 1,400 new jobs and more than 300 new business in the area through the center's assistance over the last eight years since it opened.

It's not just the success of the center that's contributed to the award for Delta College.

"Delta College and its Corporate Services staff exhibit a continuing commitment to regional economic vitality, supporting the growth and development of large and small businesses across all industries," writes Christine Greve, MI-SBTDC regional director in her nomination letter for the award. "Academically, Delta College is nurturing a curriculum that will enable students to hone their entrepreneurial skills that will allow them to contribute to and succeed in the new economy."

Some of the services the center offers are counseling, research, small business training and regional advocacy for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
