When it comes to locally-produced radio and TV, mid-Michigan's very own
Delta College Broadcasting is top on the list, as evidenced by a spate of recent awards.
Delta got seven state and national awards for their local radio and TV programming at the 32nd annual Telly Awards. The Telly Awards are an international competition honoring local, regional, cable and online TV, radio, video and film acheivements each year, and Delta's WDCQ-TV and WUCX-FM stations have, combined, taken home more than 50 broadcasting awards in recent years from the awards ceremonies.
"We are continuing our focus on local productions as people in the Great Lakes Bay Region have given us strong feedback they enjoy our programs and have learned about their region from them," says Barry Baker, general manager of Delta Broadcasting.
This year, WDCQ won four awards, and WUCX won three. The documentary
Restored to Glory, Classic Automobiles, Collectors and Their Stories won three awards all by itself, taking home three bronze awards in the Best Documentary, Use of Music and Videography/Cinematography categories for the TV station. Bay City's Robert Przybylski wrote, directed and produced
Restored to Glory, while Marshall Fulmer of Saginaw was the videographer. Writer/musician Pat Cronley of Flint scored the film, which also was nominated to the Emmy Awards, to be judged later this month.
The fourth award came from
Matrix Midland Presents...Kevin Cole: One Night Only, which took a bronze award for Best Entertainment. Bay City's Barry Baker directed and produced the project, which used 12 WDCQ crew members to record the concert live.
On the part of Delta College's Q-90.1 radio station, they earned second place in the News category with
Friday Edition, a Friday morning program created by Howard Sharper of Saginaw. Jennifer VandeZande of Midland produced and edited the program, which also involves students and volunteers in the region.
Membership appeals were a definite highlight for the radio station, since they took both first and second place in that category. First place went to the membership appeal titled
You Make Me Feel So Young, from Flint musicians Pat Cronley and Marcia Allen. Second place was taken by
Post Juan Williams, written and produced by Howard Sharper.
