Mid-Michigan counselor chosen for MSHDA award

The housing situation in Michigan is in need of some serious help, but one mid-Michigan homeownership counselor is doing her part, as shown by a recent award from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

Colleen Brubaker is a counselor with Mid Michigan Community Action, and has been for more than seven years. She is the recipient of the 2011 Counselor of the Year Award from MSHDA, which recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond in making an impact on his or her community.

Brubaker was chosen from among 220 MSHDA counselors in the state, for her excellence in helping would-be homeowners overcome adverse circumstances and achieve their goals. Some of the counseling she offers includes homebuyer education, credit counseling, financial self-sufficiency and budget training, and she does all this for people in eight mid-Michigan counties.

"Colleen truly listens to what the client is trying to achieve and helps them determine realistic goals," says Deb Schafer, assistant director of outreach services for Mid Michigan Community Action.

Her clients were among her nominators, who praised her for helping them through the home-buying process and giving them sound financial advice. Brubaker has counseled 800 families, using personal experience and up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and regulations.

"She provides clients with the tools to move forward in their life journey and empowers them," Schafer says.

Schafer says Mid Michigan Community Action is proud to have Brubaker on staff. She was presented the award at the recent Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing in Lansing.
