Some international recognition has come to
Northwood University thanks to an essay written by on of the institution's faculty members.
Evgeniv Gentchev, Northwood's department chair of international business, was the first-place selection in the Sir John M. Templeton Fellowships Essay Contest from the Independent Institute. Professors from more than 30 countries entered the highly competitive contest.
Gentchev's essay topic was centered around a quotation by French philosopher Frederic Bastiat: "Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget the state wants to live at the expense of everyone."
The topic allowed Gentchev to discuss proponents of free markets, individual freedom and limited government.
Professor Gentchev won $10,000 as well as assistance placing the winning essay for publication in prominent journals and on websites. In addition, he could be invited to speak at the Institute's seminar series or other forums.
Gentchev holds an undergraduate degree in international business and an MBA from Northwood University.
"As a Northwood graduate, I cannot overestimate the importance of the university in shaping my perspective," Genchev says. "For Northwood University, this award, as well as Alyssa Studebaker's recognition--who received an honorable mention in the student division -is a validation of the principles of the Northwood Idea."
According to Northwood University's website, the Northwood Idea "advocates the advantages of an entrepreneurial, free-enterprise society, individual freedom and responsibility, functioning from a foundation of ethics and integrity and promoting the global, diverse and multi-cultural nature of enterprise."
