Midland student wins second place in national banking contest

Andrew Dyke must really like his savings account, especially since he recently won a $1,500 savings bond with a video about saving money rather than spending it.

Dyke, a student in Midland, entered the Lights, Camera, Save! video contest and found himself taking second place. His entry, titled "Save Me" was judged by a panel comprised of innovators and communication and personal finance experts.

They chose Mason Beiter of Suffield, Conn., as the first place winner with his video "Lego Your Spending and Start Saving." Beiter won a $3,000 savings bond.

"The ABA Education Foundation congratulates Mason on creating a video that communicates the importance of saving in a fun and creative way," says Laura Fisher, executive director of the ABA Education Foundation. "Mason's message will appeal to youth and adults alike as he explains: 'saving gives you the freedom when you're older to buy things that are important to you.'"

Lights, Camera, Save!--launched late last year as an offshoot of the ABA Education Foundation's Teach Children to Save program--is a competition that encourages youth to use video to communicate the value of saving and inspire others to become lifelong savers. Some 170 banks from 45 states hosted local levels of the competition and selected a winner to represent their bank and compete on the national level.

Dyke represented Wolverine Bank with his video entry.
