Misty BarronFriday's game was sold out against the Lansing Lugnuts. On Friday, Aug. 8, the Great Lakes Loons hosted their first-ever GRIT Night, blending local football spirit with the excitement of baseball. The sold-out crowd watched a thrilling game against the Lansing Lugnuts that stretched into the tenth inning, with the Loons pulling off the win.
But the Great Lakes Loons are about a lot more than just baseball. They’ve become a vital part of the community, blending fun and entertainment with programs that promote literacy, health, local causes, and togetherness across the region.
The Loons serve as the High-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are operated by the
Michigan Baseball Foundation (MBF). Since its founding, the foundation has awarded millions of dollars in grants to local nonprofits, schools, and neighborhood projects, making a real impact far beyond the baseball diamond.
Hitting a Home Run for Literacy
One of the most popular community programs is the
Lou E. Loon Reading Program, sponsored by Delta College. It’s designed for kids ages 5 to 12 and encourages them to set reading goals with their teachers. Once they reach those goals, they earn a free ticket to a Loons game, giving young readers a chance to be part of the fun at Dow Diamond.
Reading isn’t the only way the Loons are encouraging healthy habits among kids. They’ve also launched
Lou E.’s Kids Club in partnership with MyMichigan Health. The club is free for children ages 4 to 12, and offers families resources and activities to help kids stay active and healthy — all with the help of Lou E. and his friends.
Giving Back Through Fundraising
Giving back is built into the Loons’ game-day experience. Local nonprofits regularly host ticket fundraisers, selling tickets to games and keeping a portion of the proceeds to support their causes. In addition, there’s a 50/50 raffle at every game — half of the net proceeds go to the Michigan Baseball Foundation, and the other half is awarded to the raffle’s jackpot winner. The MBF then uses its share to fund grants, maintain Midland community spaces, and support Downtown projects.

Friday nights have become a fan favorite thanks to
Foodie Fridays, sponsored by Isabella Bank. You can grab classic ballpark staples like $2 hot dogs, $1 chips, and $1 ice cream sandwiches. The menu also features a rotating lineup of gourmet treats like walking tacos, poutine, and BBQ fried chicken sandwiches.
For those looking for something a little fancier, the Chef’s Table offers a limited-seating, sit-down meal experience with carefully crafted dishes and a chance to enjoy the game in style.
The Loons also keep things lively with other themed nights sprinkled throughout the season and daily specials.
- Hometown Heroes Tuesdays honor veterans, first responders, and healthcare workers, who are offered complimentary meals as a thank you for their service.
- Paws & Claws Wednesdays invite fans to bring their dogs to the ballpark. While humans enjoy the game, their furry friends can relax on the lawn. Plus, fans can take advantage of half-off White Claws during the game.
- Thirsty Thursdays offer half-price beer specials to keep spirits high as the sun sets.
- Family Sundays are focused on the little ones, with free meals for kids 12 and under and the chance for children to run the bases after the game.

Beyond the games and community events, Dow Diamond also plays a vital role as an employer in Midland. The ballpark provides seasonal jobs to roughly 150 people each year, including students, retirees, and residents looking for flexible work.
Positions range from concessions and ticketing to operations and guest services, offering valuable experience in customer service, teamwork, and event management. The Loons also make a point of hiring locally whenever possible, contributing to the regional economy and supporting families.
