Sanford’s annual Founders Day returns Saturday, Sept. 6, bringing neighbors, families, and visitors together to celebrate the village’s history and small-town spirit. Hosted by the Sanford Historical Society, the event gives current and former residents a chance to reconnect, share stories, and enjoy a full day of activities for all ages.
The celebration kicks off with a pancake breakfast organized by the Sanford Historical Society (SHS) at 8 a.m., followed by a parade through downtown at noon. Participants in the parade will assemble at 11 a.m. on Crescent Street, with this year’s float theme being “Honor the Great Outdoors,” showcasing the natural beauty of Midland County.
Most of the day’s events will be held at the Sanford Centennial Museum grounds, where admission and parking are free. Families can enjoy three bounce houses, a kids’ workshop, face painting, temporary tattoos, and children's games, including a treasure dig, beanbag toss, and the new Lucky Ducky Game for kids 12 and under.
Two petting zoos will be open all day to offer hands-on fun. Grandma's Pumpkin Patch will feature goats and rabbits, while Pine Haven Assisted Living will have an alpaca exhibit.
The Coleman Lions will provide children’s sight screening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the Jerome Township Fire Department will host an open house from 1 to 3 p.m., showcasing firefighting equipment. Car enthusiasts can enjoy a classic car show along Saginaw Road, and the Dam Duck Race is set for 3 p.m.
Founders Day will provide a unique glimpse into Sanford’s rich history. Visitors can view military memorabilia displayed by Ron Tiger, watch demonstrations of corn milling, spinning, and blacksmithing, and explore historic tractors and trains at the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad Depot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can also take home free wood-branded souvenir plaques from Jeff Bowen, while supplies last.
Live entertainment features the Meridian High School Marching Band, a gospel sing by Lighthouse Body of Christ in Bailey Chapel, and music by the band Borderline.
Food offerings include the SHS pancake breakfast, barbecue pulled pork and kids’ meals from noon to 4 p.m., and strawberry shortcake provided by Sanford
United Methodist Church, and a church bake sale from 9 a.m. to noon. Visitors can also browse the museum’s book, T-shirt, hat, and membership sales, with donations accepted to support ongoing programs.
Organizers encourage attendees to check the
