New joint effort will explore the business of art

Artists don't always think like business people.

A new partnership formed in Benton Harbor offers new resources for artists who want to learn more about how to develop, improve or promote a creative business.

New Territory Arts Association, Box Factory for the Arts, Cornerstone Alliance Small Business Services and Lake Michigan College will host a series of eight workshops on business for artists.

The workshops begin Oct. 12 and run 12:30-2 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month through May.

The workshops topics are: Developing the Business of Art; Fear no Finances: Pricing & Cash Flow; Prepare for Tax Season; Strategize your Marketing; Web Strategies: Where to Start; Art Fairs & Galleries: How to Get In; Presenting Your Artwork & Yourself; and Thou Shall Not Steal: Protect your Ideas.

Interested participants can sign up for one or all workshops. Workshop locations will vary.  The workshops are free to members of New Territory Arts Association, Box Factory and Krasl Art Center. They cost  $15 per session for non-members. RSVP's can be made with any partner organization.

The New Territory Arts Association is a grassroots organization dedicated to the revitalization of Benton Harbor through the Arts. The New Territory Arts Association Scholarship Fund provides assistance with art education for community youth by helping with tuition for classes at The Citadel Dance Center, Water Street Glasswork's "Fired Up!" program, and other regional art education curricula. Its mission is to create a vital Benton Harbor Arts District through community outreach and advocacy of the arts.

Cornerstone Alliance Small Business Services and the Women's Business Center provide training courses, business planning assistance, and SBA Microloans to small businesses in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties.
