Groundbreaking set for Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor

As the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor’s new clubhouse and teen center come closer to reality a construction contract has been awarded to the local firm, Perason Construction Co.

The Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor has been working to raise $7 million to construct a new state-of-the-art club house and a teen center.

The project includes a 3.5-acre main campus, featuring a 28,000-square-foot clubhouse. In addition to the main campus, a state-of-the-art teen center will also be built within walking distance of Benton Harbor High School.

The teen center will be 19,000 square feet and will include first-class technology and academic support programs, an 8,000-square-foot gymnasium with regulation-sized high school basketball court, a traditional kitchen and café, a game room with computers, pool tables and ping pong tables, and an all-purpose space for performing arts programs.

Executive Director Doug Schaffer says the Boys & Girls Club is at nearly 95 percent of its goal and construction is ready to begin.

Pearson Construction Co. was established in 1918 and is headquartered in Benton Harbor, Mich. The company is known for its work in commercial, industrial, and institutional construction. It is a full-service general contracting, design build and construction management firm.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place Sept. 22, at the Benton Harbor Housing Commission, 721 Nate Wells Sr. Drive, Benton Harbor.

"We’re very pleased to have Pearson Construction Company on board to bring our goal for the children of the community to fruition," says Colleen Cullitan, President of the Boys & Girls Club of Benton Harbor.
